FIVE WAYS TO START LIVING RIGHT IN LEBANON

Written by guest author Talar Demirdjian

Exercise and a good diet aren’t the only integral parts in fitness, having a healthy lifestyle is what ensures your long-term success. Here are some steps you can take right now that will make you healthier than yesterday, and lead the way for a healthier life tomorrow.

Drink more water

It’s almost impossible to be overhydrated, so make sure you always have a water bottle with you throughout the day, and to regularly fill it. Drinking water helps your body in every single way, from glowing skin, to better digestion, to overall health and fitness. Factor in the heat and the humidity in Lebanon, drinking water may even save your life.

Eat your vegetables

When your momma told you to eat your vegetables as a kid she wasn’t saying it to be cruel. A diet high in vegetables helps reduce the risk of developing cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix, esophagus, stomach, bladder, pancreas, and ovaries. So try to eat four to five servings of vegetables a day — raw, steamed, or stir-fried. It’s so easy to do this, especially in Lebanon, since we have such amazing readily available vegetables.

Exercise daily

I know this seems like a very tough thing to do with everybody’s busy schedules, but you don’t have to have an intense 2 hour cardio workout for it to be considered exercise. Put some music on while you clean and dance your heart out, or find short exercise videos easy enough to do at home, and do them daily. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. A fitness routine doesn’t necessarily have to be grueling.

Get some sleep

Your body does not function well without proper sleep. Regulate your bedtime, download an app that monitors your sleeping pattern. Darken your room more and turn your clock away from you. If you have trouble sleeping, try yoga and meditation, or other relaxation techniques. Or eat a small bedtime snack of foods shown to help shift the body and mind into sleep mode: whole grain cereal with skimmed milk, oatmeal, cherries, or chamomile tea. Darken your room more and turn your clock away from you.

Go grocery shopping

When you have easy access to junk food, it makes it much more difficult to eat right, so go grocery shopping and stock your pantry with healthy food, so you’ll be inspired to cook healthier. There are so many readily available recipes online and even in our local cuisine in Lebanon. Teach yourself to bring healthy snacks with you wherever you go, so you're prepared when you get hungry.
